Professor Serhiy Yarmoluk, Head of the Department of Biomedical Chemistry

Academic Bio

Serhiy Yarmoluk, PhD, DSc, Professor, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine

is the Head of the Department of Biomedical Chemistry at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. His research focuses on the rational design of enzyme inhibitors, the development of fluorescent probes for biomolecule detection, and the investigation of medicinal plants as potential therapeutic agents. Professor Yarmoluk has authored over 200 scientific publications in the fields of bioorganic and medicinal chemistry.

Volodymyr Bdzhola, PhD in Chemistry

Volodymyr BDZHOLA

PhD in Chemistry, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine, and Head of the Biologically Active Molecule Design Group.

His research focuses on virtual screening, molecular modelling of protein–ligand interactions and structure–activity relationship analysis. He has authored more than 100 scientific publications.

Galyna Volynets, PhD in Biology

Galyna VOLYNETS

PhD in Biology, Senior Researcher at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Galyna Volynets’ research interests include the in silico design of enzyme inhibitors as potential antimicrobial and anticancer agents using bioinformatics, molecular docking, machine learning, molecular dynamics, metadynamics and related computational approaches. She is the principal investigator of a project focused on developing inhibitors to overcome drug resistance in BCR–ABL-positive chronic myeloid leukemia. She has authored more than 50 scientific publications.

Sergii DEMCHENKO

PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Research Associate at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine.

Sergii Demchenko’s research interests include the synthesis and study of the biological activity of thiazolopyridazinones, triazoloazepines and other fused nitrogen-containing heterocyclic systems. He earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2013, specializing in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, and has co-authored 40 scientific articles and 61 patents.

Dr Sergiy TARNAVSKIY

Junior Researcher at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine.

His research focuses on the rational design, structural optimization and chemical synthesis of novel small-molecule anticancer and antibacterial agents, as well as protein kinase inhibitors targeting CK2, FGFR1 and ASK1. He earned his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry in 2019 and has co-authored more than 30 scientific publications.

Dr Andrii PRYKHODKO

Research Scientist at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

His research focuses on the rational design, chemical synthesis and optimization of biologically active small-molecule organic compounds, including protein kinase inhibitors and novel antibacterial agents. He received his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry in 2016 and has authored more than 30 scientific publications.

Igor Kotey, PhD in Chemistry

Igor KOTEY

PhD in Chemistry, Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (IMBG NASU).

His research focuses on the development of novel small-molecule inhibitors of the human protein kinases FGFR1 and CK2, as well as the LeuRS and MetRS aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases of M. tuberculosis. He successfully defended his PhD thesis in Bioorganic Chemistry in 2019 and has co-authored 15 experimental research papers published in scientific journals.

Vladyslav SAPELKIN

Junior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

He specializes in the development, structural optimization and chemical synthesis of novel inhibitors of protein kinase CK2 and Staphylococcus aureus sortase A, as well as in the synthesis of new compounds with antifungal and anticancer activity. He has co-authored 33 scientific publications.

Oleksandr Bieda, PhD in Chemistry

Oleksandr BIEDA

PhD in Chemistry, Head of the Research Group for Physicochemical Studies of Biologically Active Compounds, and a specialist in physical methods of chemical analysis.

His research focuses on developing extraction methods and chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis of biologically active compounds in plant materials. He received his PhD in Chemistry in 2011, specializing in Physical Chemistry, and has authored more than 40 scientific publications.

Taisiia Pylaieva, Master’s student in Chemoinformatics

Academic Bio

Taisiia PYLAIEVA

Master’s student in Chemoinformatics at the Institute of High Technologies, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Her research interests include the analytical chemistry of medicinal plants, phytochemical analysis, mass spectrometry, the application of chemoinformatics in biomedical research, and the investigation of biologically active compounds in plant-derived extracts. Taisiia is an alumna of the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) programme in Canada and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Taras MAIULA

Leading Engineer and PhD student at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine.

His research focuses on developing in silico machine-learning models for predicting the biological activity of plant-extract constituents, combined with LC–MS and GC–MS profiling of medicinal plant material. He is completing his PhD in Biology and Biochemistry and has authored 6 scientific publications.

He contributes to the organization and implementation of research activities and provides analytical support for experimental studies. In 2020, he received his PhD in Biotechnology and Bioengineering. He has authored 19 scientific publications.

Candidate of Technical Sciences (PhD equivalent), Junior Researcher at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Dr Voitiuk’s research focuses on the development of primary transducers and sensors for measuring mechanical, physical and chemical quantities. He received his Candidate of Technical Sciences degree in 2011, specializing in instruments and methods for measuring mechanical quantities. He has co-authored 10 scientific publications.

Senior Researcher, Deputy Head of the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, and Group Leader for Fluorescent Probe Development for Biomedical Applications at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, NAS of Ukraine.

His research focuses on the design, structural optimization and chemical synthesis of novel small-molecule protein kinase inhibitors targeting CK2, FGFR1 and ASK1, as well as anti-tuberculosis agents. He earned his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry in 2003 and has co-authored 57 scientific publications.

Anatolii BALANDA

PhD in Chemistry, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

His research focuses on the development of fluorescent dyes for detecting biopolymers in homogeneous systems, the synthesis of thienopyrimidine derivatives as inhibitors of the protein kinases CK2 and FGFR1, and the investigation of the chemical composition and biological activity of plant materials. He has authored and co-authored more than 90 scientific publications.
