Prof. Serhii Yarmoluk

Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry

In 1979, Serhii graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv with a Specialist degree in Chemistry.

He has been with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics (IMBG) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 1979. Over the years, he has held several key positions within the Institute: starting in the Department of Protein Chemistry (1979), moving to the Oligonucleotide Synthesis Group (1983), the Laboratory for Synthesis and Study of Biospecific Compounds (1985), and the Department of Nucleic Acid Chemistry (1993). In 1996, he was appointed Head of the Nucleic Acid Chemistry Research Group.

Serhii earned his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry in 1993, with a dissertation focused on the synthesis and study of oligonucleotides modified with peptide residues. In 2005, he obtained his Doctor of Sciences (D.Sc.) degree in Bioorganic Chemistry, defending his thesis on "Development of Cyanine Dye-Based Fluorescent Probes for the Detection of Nucleic Acids and Proteins." He was awarded the academic title of Professor of Bioorganic Chemistry in 2006.

Currently, Serhii serves as the Head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the IMBG. He leads numerous national and international research projects.

Research Interests:development of protein kinase inhibitors using combinatorial chemistry, computer modeling, and high-throughput screening; development of fluorescent probes for the detection of biological macromolecules.

lukashov

Dr. Serhii Lukashov

Head of the Fluorescent Probe Development for Biomedical Applications Research Group, Deputy Head of Department

In 1997, Serhii graduated with a Specialist degree in Chemistry from the Faculty of Chemistry at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, specializing in the Chemistry of Natural Compounds.

In 2003, he earned his PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry under the supervision of Academician Professor H. Matsuka and Dr. S. Yarmoluk. His doctoral research focused on the synthesis of fluorescent cyanine dyes for DNA detection.

Serhii has been with the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 1997. He currently serves as a Senior Researcher in the Department of Medicinal Chemistry. Serhii has co-authored over 40 scientific papers, and his current research interests lie in the design and synthesis of small organic compounds targeting protein kinases.

bdzhola2

Dr. Volodymyr Bdzhola

Head of the Computer-Aided Drug Design (CADD) Group

In 1994 Volodymyr received Specialist degree in Chemistry, Chemical Department of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

1998 – Ph.D degree in chemistry, Chemical Department of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University.

Volodymyr have been working at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since 2001. Now he is a Senior Research Scientist of Department

of Medicinal Chemistry. Volodymyr is a co-author of more than 100 publications in scientific journals.

Research Interests: Investigation of molecular mechanisms of enzymes action; study of protein-ligand interactions; virtual screening of small organic compounds and optimization of screening algorithms; determination of structure–activity relationship (SAR); molecular modeling; computer-aided drug design.

beda

Dr. Oleksandr Bieda

Principal Investigator (PI), Head of the Ethnopharmacology Research Group

Graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv in 2007, received a Master's degree in Chemistry (Physical Chemistry).

In 2011, he defended his PhD thesis under the supervision of Professor O. V. Ishchenko (specialization in physical chemistry). His work was devoted to the development of transition metal-based oxidation catalysts and the establishment of their micro- and nanostructure and mechanisms of operation.

From 2011 to 2019, Oleksandr Bieda worked as a research associate at the Faculty of Chemistry of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Since 2021, he has been a research associate in the Department of Biomedical Chemistry, where he heads a group which studies biologically active compounds by physical methods. He has experience in chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS and LC-MS), IR and NMR spectroscopy, and other physico-chemical research methods.

He is a co-author of more than 20 scientific papers.

Scientific interests: physical methods of research of chemical compounds, biologically active compounds of natural origin, research and standardization of plant raw materials.
